  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Barbara MojicaTop Contributor: Children's Books -- POIGNANT AND POWERFUL : This book is told in first person based on the experiences of Vincent J. Riccio and edited by his daughter. It begins with the attack on Pearl Harbor and Riccio's subsequent draft a few months later. Riccio began his service as an aviation mechanic in Mississippi. The first part of the book focuses on his hi jinks and pranks with his buddies as a young soldier. But Riccio wanted to fly; he eventually manages to get training as an aviator. After being sent to Horhem in England, Riccio flew combat missions over Germany. On the Luduigshafen mission, his plane was shot down. Riccio parachuted to safety, but eventually was taken prisoner by the Germans. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2016 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Major T -- This Book Makes You Proud to be an American : While not great or even professional writing the story of Vincent J. Riccio's WWII experiences is an engaging true story of a U.S. Air Force bomber crew member. The first part of the book describes Vincent's early army life, failure to complete cadet flight training and subsequent assignment as an aerial gunner on a B-17. Flying out of England, Sergeant Riccio plane was shot down on his tenth mission and he parachuted into the German countryside only to be captured and avoids threats to kill him. He ends up in a POW camp for a year and is nearly starved to death and forced to make a long march in winter. Happy ending as Riccio is liberated and makes it home safely. A good story of a patriotic member of America's "greatest generation." The story is taken from the veteran's own words as recorded and transcribed by his loving family members. As an Air Force veteran of the Cold War I appreciated the story of this man's service and sacrifice for our country. A feel good read that made me proud. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from ShichidanBB -- I wish it could have been longer... : This was a very good accounting by a WWII veteran of his experiences in the military in general as well as a downed flight crew member who was captured and interned in a POW camp. While a very good read, I wished he had gone into more detail; I'm positive he had much more he could have spoken about. Otherwise, as a Vietnam Veteran, I appreciated his candor in talking about what it was like being in a war. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2016 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Bill K -- World War II Bomber Crew Memoir : This compilation of the author's random observations of his life in World War II was sometimes amusing, sometimes fascinating. I just wish that he had provided more descriptions of the people, the airplanes, and what it is like to fly bombing missions with the enemy trying to shoot him down. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from K. Worthington -- Kyle Worthington : I enjoyed reading this book, Ever the Patriot. Vincent tries to join up after Pearl Harbor was not yet 21 The Marines turned him down next when he did turned 21 for health reasons. But finally Uncle Sam got him! US Army Air Corps Vincent goes as a Instrument Tech. May be not the greatest soldier to come out of WW2, he loved practical jokes, and sometimes not the most serious soldier, Vincent did get into trouble sometimes. But like a real soldier he did fly ten mission and was shot down on that tenth one, was captured and faced death like many a soldiers in WW2!! Like many who did not, Vincent survives, then starts is long journey home. Very fast moving story, an easy read, but most of all a young man, green, and no experience, who like many of us today never got a chance to be in a real war "Ever the Patriot" Vincent never thought himself to be a Hero, but I beg to differ!!! This easy to read and understand description of his encampment should be read by all WWII buffs and dare I say history classes in school. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2014 )

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from LK -- Great read : Ever the Patriot is a fantastic read and I could not put it down, reading it from "cover to cover" without putting it down in one sitting. The story flows, has enough detail to make it feel real, and yet moves along at a good pace. Anyone who has an interest in a personal account of WWII will find this a fascinating read. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from andrew shaw -- Very very good : Transcribed from audio tapes so it's not a professionally written book. That said its all the better for it, as while you read it you can almost imagine the subject sitting there and telling you the story. Very good and well worth reading ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 15, 2017 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Skodabloke -- An informative read. : Worth reading. It would have been nice if the book was longer because I enjoyed the history from someone who was there and lived to tell the tale. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 16, 2017 )
